Saturday, September 13, was a wet and stormy night, and as security officer Christopher Gleason did his round of Eisenhower State Park, he noticed something strange in the lake.  He shone his lights on the form, and it was then he realized that what he had actually seen was a dog, and she was hanging on to the side of the lake for dear life.  He immediately called his co-worker Mike Tesoriere, and together they pulled the dog, that we have affectionately nicknamed ‘Mamie Eisenhower‘ from the lake.  She was cold and scared and they kept her in their office until the next morning.   As a stray, ‘Mamie’ needed to spend several days at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter to allow her family time to find her.  During that time Mike reached out to Little Shelter, and as soon as she was able to released from the town shelter, we took ‘Mamie’ into our care.  ‘Mamie’ needed much more than a roof over her head.  When she came to us she was emaciated and the effects of being in a cold lake had left her quite ill.  We ensured that ‘Mamie’ received much needed medical attention and set her on the path to recovery.  We know that ‘Mamie’ has a family out there somewhere as it is obvious she was a much loved dog.  ‘Mamie’ is a senior lady that is very social and loves attention.   She is possibly a lab/shepherd mix.

It is our dream to reunite ‘Mamie’ with her loved ones.  If you recognize this sweet girl, please call Little Shelter at 631-368-8770 x205 or x206 and make our dream of a happy reunion come true!    Whatever the outcome may be, Mamie’s story will have a happy ending!  If her family can not be located, her life-saver Chris and his family are eagerly waiting to take her home!
